Its January, and even in the Pacific NW you'd think there's nothing coming up yet. But as I go & pull back the grass, moss & sometimes a bit of soil I can find some medicinal herbs starting to grow already. This is one of those rare days in January when its 13C, which is 55F & sunny, the birds are singing & its a great day for gardening.
BLACKBERRY is green all year & can be harvested at any time. Its a useful astringent that works well on the bowels.
You can use any parts: leaves & stems are easiest to harvest.
New growth on the Blackberry canes.
COMFREY is starting to grow too. Had to dig a bit in the old soggy leaves from last year to find the new growth.
Found some Yarrow coming up. Yarrow is becoming one of my favorite plants. Its MOVES blood & stagnation. So while it can be used to stop bleeding, it can be used to MOVE stagnant blood in areas that are swollen or bruised. Also stagnant areas of the body that need healing, such as painful areas where muscles & joints need energy movement through them.
Some LEMON BALM coming up! Lemon balm is one of my favorite fragrant teas for helping me sleep.
MOTHERWORT, tiny fuzzy leaves just coming up at the base.
